Star Trek - The Best Nails I've Ever Made

I have never been more proud of a set of nails. It might even be true that I've never been more proud of anything I've ever done (and I've done some pretty awesome stuff). These are my Star Trek nails. These came about when I started trying to alter the Obele nails I did the other day slightly. I created this weird pyramid shape that I loved and when I looked down the barrel of the nail the first thing I thought of was the emblem on the shirts of the characters of Star Trek.

A while ago Ron and I started the endeavor of watching all the episodes of Star Trek in conjunction with all the movies. Ron would tell you that I've given up on this, but I think I'll tell you my side of the story. I grew up on Next Generation, which I adored. But I had never seen the original series. Ron being the nerd that he is, insisted this must change. We started watching the original series and I have to say I was hugely impressed. I also was totally unaware of how much pop culture has derived from the series, I mean I thought it was a lot, but I had no idea how much.

After a while my enjoyment of watching a few episodes a day dwindled, and (some of you get ready to hate me), I know exactly why that was. I really really really hate Kirk. I just don't understand why anyone would ever make him a captain. He is totally susceptible to EVERY SINGLE problem they encounter. And like, if you put a woman in front of him he becomes complete jelly and forgets about all his duties. Now, Spock, there's captain material for you. Why in the hell is Spock not the captain? It's mind boggling. Every time Kirk messes something up, there's Spock to coming to the rescue. Ron claims that the genius of the show is the interplay between Kirk, Spock, and Bones. He says that the fact that their personalities make up the goodness of humanity (ie. Spock is the brains, Bones is the heart, Kirk is the spirit) is beautiful. NOTE: I asked Ron to recite his personalities theory and he quickly said "Spock is the brains, Bones it the heart....." And I was like, "and what is Kirk" his response was, "I guess Kirk is like the spirit or something." So obviously even Ron is aware of Kirk's suckiness. I said it.

Another view. Here you can see that the pinky says "Star Trek" in the font used for the original series.
Because I invented this nail shape, I think I get to name it. So these are officially named The Warp nails. Here's a photo that shows off the height and the angle of the top of the nails.

OTHER STUFF:
Check out Leslie from Polish Art Addiction's Star Trek nails here. I am like obsessed with her design, and though it isn't overtly obvious, her set of Star Trek nails totally inspired me.

My friend Mark made like the best comment ever about these nails. He said, "Middle finger dies."

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Yay! More nails that were done for my collaboration with Leslie from Polish Art Addiction for our Peculiar Polish series. These nails were actually my FIRST attempt ever at doing a picture tutorial! Check it out on Leslie's blog here

Home Improvement

First of all: Merry Christmas!

You may remember a little show called Home Improvement staring Tim Allen, Patrica Richardson,  Zachary Ty Bryan and the heartthrob of many a young girl: JTT. Every year, the defunct Tim Taylor (Tim Allen) would hang Christmas lights and end up hanging upside down himself! Those were some of my favorite Christmas specials when I was a kid.

For these nails I painted Wilson, the Taylor's next door neighbor whose face is never seen. He is the sage of the show and Tim often went to him for advice. I painted him exactly how he's always seen: behind a fence. I also painted a tool box on my index finger, and the logo for Home Improvement on my thumb.

Twin Peaks

These are (I think obviously) Twin Peaks nails! Twin Peaks was a mystery television show from the early 1990's that followed an FBI agent as he attempted to solve a murder. And as it probably was for Special Agent Cooper, trying to figured out who killed Laura Palmer was insanely exciting for me. Usually I am not interested in television dramas (or really any dramas) but what really makes this one stand out is David Lynch, who in conjunction with Mark Frost wrote and produced the show. David Lynch is known for his surreal take on the world. And he is one of my favorite directors. Everything he touches becomes brighter (This is a hilarious joke if you're a Lynch fan, because he is known for his vibrant use of colors. I'm hilarious). He is probably most known for Dune but my favorites are pretty much everything else: EraserheadThe Elephant ManBlue VelvetThe Straight Story (which is possibly his more "normal" film), and Mulholland Drive.

For these nails I painted the infamous "red room" inside the Black Lodge on my left hand. Below is a screen shot of the room.  While my right hand was the sign that is seen in the opening credits reading "Twin Peaks/Population 50201" my thumb is the twin peaks =)

Lucky Louie

Louis C.K. is probably one of the funniest men alive. You might know of him from his stand-up comedy, the fact that he directed Pootie Tang, or his current television show Louie. Even though those contributions have been awesome, probably my favorite Louis C.K. related things is his sitcom (which is no longer airing) Lucky Louie. Lucky Louie is about the tribulations that a poor family go through to make life work. Pamela Adlon is hilarious as Louie's wife and Kelly Gould knows all the right questions to ask as their daughter. Mike Hagerty (Treeger from Friends) plays a family friend, and plenty of other great actors grace the show. It is hilarious and bleak all at the same time. If you can't tell already, I would highly recommend you watch it.

But I digress -- These nails are from the opening credits of the show. There is a drawing of each of the characters' face's in the opening credits, so I chose to put Pamela, Louie, Mike Hagerty, and Kelly Gould on my nails. The thumbs are the building-scape that is also in the credits.

Futurama

Zoidberg is my favorite which is why he got two nails (the pinky is his face and the thumb are his claws).
You'll probably start to notice a pattern that I am a huge Matt Groening fan. It all started when I was about 3 when my family and I began watching The Simpsons during dinner. Since then, I have loved pretty much anything he is involved with. Of course, Futurama is no exception. When it came out, I almost got the same feelings that I did watching new episodes of the early seasons of The Simpsons. And since then I haven't missed an episode or movie, and you probably couldn't pay me enough to (well, you probably could... but I'm kinda poor).

South Park

Kenny, Cartman, Kyle, and Stan. The right hand just had the boys again, but I was trying to show off the fact that I wrote South Park across my two thumbs so that when I put them together it completed the words. They all look kind of stoned... oops.

MST3K!

For our first date ever, Ron and I went to a 12 hour movie marathon. Not only that, but it was in Boston (a six hour drive away). We had only spoken about 5 words to each other before spending those 24 straight hours together. When we got back in Rochester, expecting to be exhausted and part ways, we realized that we wanted nothing more than to watch more movies together! We watched a Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode (Ron thinks it was Zombie Nightmare) and probably another few movies. Now we have a friend who is working with Rifftrax (the creators of MST3K's new baby). So these nails were for him and for memories of how awesome the show was! The left hand (bottom) is the silhouette of Tom Servo, Mike Nelson, and Crow as the peanut gallery. And the right hand just simply says MST3K.
